L. Brooks Patterson: 'Grand Bargain' sounds like a grand shaft

Posted: Updated:
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WJBK) - The governor's office is concerned that Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson could blow up the so-called Grand Bargain for Detroit retirees as the state senate prepares to vote on it next week.

Patterson tells FOX 2 political insider Tim Skubick he thinks the Grand Bargain is a "Grand Shaft."

Patterson and the governor are at odds - big time. Patterson want the Senate to include in the Grand Bargain language that would protect Oakland County taxpayers if there are changes to the Detroit water board.

The governor wants that out of the package and is telling taxpayers in Oakland and Macomb counties they are actually getting a deal on this Grand Bargain.

Patterson says his bean counters come up with a much higher number.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel is not buying the governor's numbers either.

The governor is worried about Patterson blowing up the deal if he does not back off.

In this political tug-of-war between the county executive and the state's chief executive, the governor has picked up two important allies. The top leaders in the state Senate, where this issue will be debated next week, are saying leave the water out of this bill.

With senators Randy Richardville and Gretchen Whitmer on the governor's side Patterson may lose the battle next week, but Skubick reports you can never underestimate Patterson.
