Summer struggle facing food shelves, families in-need

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (KMSP) -

As the end of the school year creeps closer, some food shelves are starting to see demands skyrocket.

Prism in Golden Valley, Minn. had 100 people walk through their doors in the past two days. Typically they see 550 families over the course of a month.

“We don't see people sleeping under trees, we don't see people pan handling in the suburb, it's hidden,” said executive director of Prism, Michelle Ness. “People are doubling up. People are living on as little as possible."

Prism serves people in Golden Valley, New Hope, Crystal and Robbinsdale.

Fox 9 spoke with a single mother of four going through the food shelf. She was willing to share her story, but not her name.

Her kids are among the 322,000 students statewide who depend on free or reduced price school lunch and breakfasts. She's now bracing for summer when those meals aren’t available to her kids.

“I've been coming here every now and then when it gets hard…because they are so nice I don't want to take advantage of .It helps me and my family. I can't believe what they give us.”

Focused on that additional need for the summer months, Prism is catering to kids with snack packs, and meals that don’t’ require cooking home alone. Items such as raisins, fruit cups, and peanut butter are in high demand.

“This is so helpful to me.. I don't know what I would do without Prism,” the mother said.

To help raise funding Prism is hosting it’s first Taste of the Burbs Gala. Fox 9’s Leah Beno is co emcee of the event. If you’d like to find out more about the services or how to a donate go to http://prismmpls.org/
