Body found set on fire, 3rd victim to be discovered in that area

DETROIT (WJBK) - A man's body was found dumped and set on fire in the middle the Lodge service drive near Log Cabin Street, which is around the same blight-stricken area that other murder victims have been discovered.

"A white Envoy truck came through here. The next thing I know ... I'm sitting there watching TV, I just [saw] the ambulance and the fire truck. We come outside and there's a body right there burning," remembers John Elliot.

Sources tell FOX 2's Taryn Asher the victim is a black male in his early- to mid-20s who was shot in the head, dumped then set on fire. This is the third body dumped in this area in the last two years. The two other bodies were found inside an abandoned house.

You may remember in January of 2013 when 23-year-old Dynasty Miles was abducted from the Beni Hana restaurant in Dearborn. The young mother had been shot and killed, and her body was dumped in this vacant house on Log Cabin.

The case remains unsolved.

Exactly one year later the body of 32-year-old Sylvester Williams from Allen Park was found inside the same abandoned house. Four people were arrested in connection to his murder.

At this point, police don't believe any of the three cases are connected.

Meanwhile, Elliot tells Asher he knows his neighborhood has problems, specifically the non-working lights and the trash that constantly lines the streets.

John Roach, the mayor's spokesperson, says the city will do something about it. Within the last two weeks what's called the hardest hit program, in which federal dollars are used to demolish the dilapidated houses, has expanded its boundaries which will now include this troubled west-side area.

The street lights are not part of the LED upgrade, which is now focused on the northwest and northeast side of Detroit but the city is working to get the lights back on in the interim.

And when it comes to the garbage, Roach says DPW plans to get on it within the next few days..

FOX 2 has brought this abandoned area to the attention of the city and plans to stay on it, hoping to prevent another crime - possibly another dumping of a body.
