MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WJBK) - The two candidates for governor are on Mackinac Island but Gov. Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer are not going to meet, let alone debate.

Schauer was not invited to the Detroit Chamber Mackinac Conference event but he showed up anyway.

The chamber has already endorsed Gov. Snyder as he was center stage not once but twice.

Schauer was relegated to doing one-on-one interviews with the media, away from the Grand Hotel. He called for five debates this fall.

"Some might say you're dreaming as he only did one debate last time - why would he give you five?" Skubick asks Schauer.

"Well, this is a very different race he understands that. I mean, that's why he and his dark-money friends have been spending millions of dollars attacking me," Schauer responded to Skubick.

"It's very premature to be talking about debates. I mean, we're not even through "the primary season." So, I'm going to stay focused on Detroit and transportation and important issues like that," Snyder says.

The state Democratic Party chair has a challenge. Democrats often stay home in the race for governor every four years. The State Democratic Chair Lon Johnson wants to anger the Democrats to get them to the polls, and Schauer says they are angry.

"One thing that Rick Snyder and an extreme legislature have done is unified Democrats," says Schauer.

The Democrats claim that individual citizens do not feel better about their economy, even though their state has improved.

"The Michigan voters don't need to be told that they're better off four years from now, they just need to take a look at what's outside their door. Are the roads any better? Are the classrooms any less crowded? Are there more jobs? And the answer is no," says Johnson.

"At the end of the day, Michigan citizens are going to be looking at their checkbooks, their savings accounts, their job growth, their bonus checks and then making a decision on how am I compared to where I was," says the State Republican Chair, Bobby Schostak.

The United Nations representative for Afghanistan says an audit of the country's presidential election should be completed around Sept. 10 and that the inauguration could happen after that.
A massive audit of Afghanistan's disputed presidential election won't be done until Sept. 10, the U.N. said Thursday, quashing hopes the new president would be determined before an upcoming NATO summit.
