Medical marijuana signed into Minnesota law

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton signed just one bill into law Thursday: the authorized use of medical marijuana.

“I thank everyone who worked together to craft and pass this legislation.” Dayton said. “I pray it will bring to the victims of ravaging illnesses the relief they are hoping for.”

THE LAW

Chapter 311, SF 2470: This bill creates a patient registry under the Department of Health relating to the therapeutic use of medical cannabis. It authorizes the use of medical cannabis in limited forms for certain qualifying medical conditions and regulates the distribution and manufacture of medical cannabis. It also creates a task force to conduct an impact assessment on medical cannabis therapeutic research and provides for certain criminal and civil protections for parties involved in the registry program.

Medical marijuana legislation passed the House on a 89-40 vote, and the Senate on a 46-16 vote.

COVERED CONDITIONS

Unlike other states that have adopted medical cannabis legislation, Minnesota patients will not be allowed to smoke marijuana and may only access cannabis if they qualify for a doctor-recommended study.

Under the new law, patients with the following conditions will be considered:

- AIDS

- ALS

- Cancer

- Crohn's disease

- Glaucoma

- MS

- Seizures

- Tourette's

- Terminal illnesses with less than a year of life expectancy

By some estimates, pornography is now a $10-billion industry in America -- bigger than the NFL, NBA and MLB, but the profits sometimes come at a tragic cost.
