Washington DC ranked fittest and healthiest in US

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

How fit and healthy are the people in the Washington D.C. region? According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), D.C. tops the list this year as the fittest and healthiest metropolitan area in the United States. D.C. dethrones Minneapolis-St. Paul, who previously held the top spot for the last three years.

ACSM used the most current publicly available data from federal reports and past studies to help come up with their annual American Fitness Index of the 50 largest metropolitan areas of the United States.

Health and community/environmental health indicators such eating habits, physical activity, health problems, recreational facilities and parkland were just some of the factors taken into account to provide a score for each city.

ACSM says their report “reflects a composite of preventive health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, and community resources and policies that support physical activity.”

Richmond, Va. came in at No. 21 on the list while Baltimore was No. 25.

Here is the Top 5: (Score)

1. Washington D.C. (77.3)
2. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. (73.5)
3. Portland, Ore. (72.1)
4. Denver, Colo. (71.7)
5. San Francisco, Calif. (71.0)

21. Richmond, Va. (52.3)
25. Baltimore, Md. (50.8)
