Brewer Academy in Detroit sends message to Nigeria: Bring back our girls

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - In an effort to bring home and personalize the dramatic situation in Nigeria, where nearly 300 schoolgirls have been abducted by Islamic extremists, the students and faculty at Brewer Academy in Detroit have put together a music video with a message to send across the world: "Bring back our girls."

Brewer Academy Principal Cecily Wilson says she wanted to help people understand the gravity of 300 girls simply disappearing in Nigeria. "I had a vision," says Wilson, "so I sort of re-wrote the lyrics to the song "Abraham, Martin and John"and asked two of my teachers to create a video message that we could send to the world."

The girls were abducted on April 15 and the latest development has Nigeria's military chiefs and the president split over how to free them from their Islamic extremist captors, with the military saying use of force could get the hostages killed and the president reportedly ruling out a prisoner-hostage swap.

During the week of May 11, Brewer Academy 8th grade teachers Ms .Morgan and Ms. Pryor made Principal Wilson's vision a reality.  In a span of only two days, the teachers got the entire student body, from kindergarten to 8th grade, to practice a song, wear coordinated red shirts, shoot, record and edit the music video.

In the video the kids sing Wilson's "Bring Back our Girls" lyrics and then deliver a very personal on-camera message: "Have you seen my sisters, they look just like me."

"These kids could not imagine being kidnapped at our school," says Wilson, "and what's interesting is that our girls live in what has been reported as one of the worst zip codes in the country, 48205.  Suddenly their problems here in Detroit do not seem as bad."

Wilson says the video is about love and hope.  She is grateful to the staff, students and parents who helped put it together.

"If 300 girls went missing in America we would search every inch of the earth to find them," says Wilson.

On Wednesday, Fox 2's Maurielle Lue will be at the school to talk to the girls about what it meant to them to create this video.  See her full report in our 6 PM newscast.
