MOSQUITO HATCH: Rain, heat revive blood-sucking brood in metro

Posted: Updated:

Everyone wanted to be outside to enjoy the first summer-like weekend of this year, but the warm weather didn't arrive alone. Minnesota's No. 1 pest is back --and helicopters are now treating hotspots.

The arrival was inevitable, but the Metropolitan Mosquito Patrol says the numbers are somewhat typical.

"We almost got through Memorial Day weekend without seeing that many mosquitos, but now they're definitely out in some hotspots, especially in the north part of the metro," Mike McLean, of Metro Mosquito Control, told Fox 9 News.

The hatch got a bit of a late start, but after big rain totals and a heat wave, this year's brood began taking wing in yards and parks over the weekend.

"What I'm looking at now are Aides mosquitos," Entomologist Carey Lamere said. "They're mosquitos that hatch after we've had a rainfall."

Metro Mosquito Control helicopters have already treated more than 100,000 acres of lakes and wetlands to try and control a large hatch.

"Sometimes, the mosquitos can be real intense at first because you've had a local brood of mosquitos," McLean explained. "Hopefully by this time next week, some of those hotspots won't be quite so hot."

If there's any good news about the return of mosquito season, it's that the mosquitos hatching now are not the kind that carry diseases like West Nile Virus. Those will hatch later in the summer.
