SCHOOL LUNCH: Political fight brewing over healthy menus

Posted: Updated:

It's important for children to eat healthy foods, but there's a big fight over the new guidelines for school lunches because some think the new menu isn't as appealing.

Fox 9 News found seniors in St. Louis Park hitting the McDonald's for lunch. It's just across the street, and when it comes to young taste-buds, what is tasty can often wins over what's nutritious.

Some think the newer, more nutritious school lunches they sometimes skip aren't as appealing, but others haven't really noticed. Yet, the students all agree that more gets thrown out.

First Lady Michelle Obama hosted school leaders in Washington on Tuesday to rally support for the lunch requirements as they come under stronger fire from critics.

"We're now seeing efforts in Congress to roll back these new standards and undo the hard work that all of you, all of us have done on behalf of our kids, and this is unacceptable," she said.

Some schools say the rules are too restrictive and too expensive, and a new GOP-backed bill would allow schools to opt out if they lose money.

Yet, Chef Marshall O'Brien, whose St. Louis Park company consults with Minnesota schools to develop menus that meet the guidelines, says it's really all about making healthier foods more appealing to eat.

"Raw vegetables are fine, but you want flavor, and we know -- with fruits, because they're sweet and studies show -- when you provide cut fruit, consumption goes up and food waste goes down," he said.
