Oakland County man arrested after police chase

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - An Oakland County man is in custody after Macomb County Sheriffs were led on a chase Sunday.

Gary Karas, 36, of Troy, was arrested for leading a Macomb County Sheriffs Deputy on a chase exceeding speeds of 100 miles-per-hour.

Just after 6 p.m. Sunday a Macomb County Sheriff Deputy made a traffic stop on a blue Ford F150 pick-up truck on North River Road near I-94 in Harrison Township.

Upon talking to the suspect, the deputy believed that he may be intoxicated. So, the deputy asked the suspect to step out of his car at which time the suspect shifted his car into reverse, intentionally backed into the patrol car and sped off, according to Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham.

The suspect lead the deputy on a chase on I-94 westbound and exited the freeway at Metropolitan Parkway. A second sheriff car was waiting to intercept the chase, where the F150 struck the occupied patrol car, ending the pursuit.

Karas has been arraigned on eight charges including Operating While Intoxicated Third Offense, Open Intoxication, Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Fleeing and Resisting Police.

Karas is being held in the Macomb County Jail.

No deputies were injured.
