Watch: The Annual Spring Thaw across North America

Posted: Updated:
We all know how long it takes for Minnesota to warm in the spring and finally become snow and ice free… well almost, there is STILL ice on Lake Superior. But ever wonder how long it takes for much of North America to thaw? Well here is your chance. The North American Snow and Ice Data Center (didn’t think there was one of those did ya?) keeps track of every ice cube and snowflake on the continent. Using advanced satellite imagery, they are able to depict where snow and ice still remain across the area. They then take a “snapshot”, so to speak, of the overall conditions on a daily basis and publish them for the world to see.

Here is where there was ice and snow cover across the continent on April 1st…

Here is where there is snow and ice cover now…

It’s pretty remarkable how fast it melts if you truly think about it. Obviously, the bodies of water melt far slower than the land does. Many of the larger lakes in Canada will have ice on them all the way into July with much of the Arctic staying covered until August. Here is a time lapse of the melting that has occurred since April 1st… enjoy!
