Ransomware Computer Virus On The Rise

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It may look official, but it’s really a computer virus that is meant to scare you.

It's called Ransomware, a class of malware which restricts access to the computer system that it infects and demands a ransom paid to the creator of the malware in order for the restriction to be removed.

The virus tells your computer is locked with an official looking FBI seal. But the FBI has nothing to do with it.

Assistant Special Agent in charge of the FBI's Cybercrime Division, Nick Savage, says Ransomware is on the rise. All it takes is for a person to click on an infected link in an email attachment or by visiting a hacked website.

FOX 29's Chris Murphy has more details on ransomware and what to look out for in this video report.

If a person falls victim to this kind of scam, they're urged to notify local law enforcement and report it to the FBI. The best defense for your data is to backup the computer with an external hard drive. Make sure your virus protection and computer system are regularly updated.
