GRANT'S GARAGE: Hundreds flock to Day 1 of beloved Vikings coach's last sale

Posted: Updated:

A huge crowd gathered outside the home of a Hall of Fame legend on Wednesday as former Vikings Coach Bud Grant set out many of his possessions for garage sale shoppers to peruse.

Dozens of people were drawn to the prospect of owning a piece of Vikings history, especially something belonging to such a beloved coach.

Bud Grant's garage sale isn't your average stop-and-shop full of haggles and bargains. In fact, the neighborhood looked more like a tailgating lot hours before the sale even opened.

"This is right up my alley," Jesse Emerson said.

Emerson was the first to arrive at 1:30 p.m. and waited 3.5 hours until the opening.

"Be respectful, look at what you want, select what you want, and we'll be happy you all came and spent money," Grant said.

After the quick pep talk, the old whistle came out and it was game-on.

"Cash appreciated," Grant said. "Checks accepted."

The legendary coach -- 87 years young -- took photographs, signed autographs and made some money at a garage sale that still will have enough wares to keep the sale alive again on Thursday and Friday.

"This is amazing. I should have sold tickets or should have sold beer," Grant quipped. "It's a good crowd; it's a good day. We're blessed to have these people and fans here, having a good time."

SALE HOURS

No early-birds will be allowed at Bud Grant's garage sale -- and he says it's a calculated decision.

"I want to get all the people coming home from work with all the money, not the ladies that come at 8 a.m. with no money," he explained.

Haggling also won't be an option, but interested shoppers can stop by during the following times:

Thursday, May 22, 2014 -- 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Friday, May 23, 2014 -- 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
