3 facts about Minnesota's new puppy mill law

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A new Minnesota law is expected to help the crackdown on abusive puppy and kitten mills.

“The Cat and Dog Breeder Regulation Law is a huge step forward. Minnesota is home to some of the largest puppy mills in the country,” Minnesota director for the Humane Society Howard Goldman said. “Now law enforcement officers will have the tools they need to stop the abuse at these facilities before it rises to the level of animal cruelty.”

The law will go into effect July 1.

3 FACTS

1. The new law requires commercial dog and cat breeders to obtain a state license and to submit to annual inspections by the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.

2. Any operator who has been convicted of animal cruelty will not be allowed to obtain a state license.

3. Anyone in violation of the law will be subject to administrative and criminal penalties.
