MEMORIAL DAY: Water safety a priority due to high levels

Posted: Updated:
ELK RIVER, Minn. (KMSP) -

The weather should be nice enough for Minnesotans to enjoy Memorial Day weekend outdoors, but officials are urging those who plan to camp that water safety is key to avoiding tragedy.

A somber anniversary serves as a reminder for families bringing children to campgrounds along one of Minnesota's many lakes and rivers. Chris and Alicia Kish are getting their camper ready, but although the Elk River area holds fond memories, it also hosts dangers.

Last year, 2-year-old Daisy Jo Holland fell victim to one. She disappeared while playing near the river and drowned while her parents were setting up their campsite.

Recent rains have caused that river to sell a foot and a half above normal height this year, flooding part of the campground that is planning a memorial for Holland on Saturday -- the first anniversary of her death.

Yet, the Kishes say keeping a close eye on young campers is the best way to honor her memory.

The mosquitoes are slowly returning to Minnesota as water temperatures return to warmer levels where their larva can hatch, but the pesky biting bug isn’t the only one coming back. Mayflies have been rumored to be starting to hatch.
