DETROIT (WJBK) - A 16-year-old has been in a coma for nearly a month after a basketball rim came crashing down on him.

Tyjuan Davis was playing basketball with his brother, Tyreice, at Stoepel Park No. 2 in Detroit when he the basketball rim and backboard fell on him. He hit his head on the blacktop.

Tyreice, 13, tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue he rode his bike home screaming for help.

Tyjuan has been in Children's Hospital since the day of the accident, April 21. He is in a medically induced coma.

His family says he blinks his eyes and moves his mouth, but doctors say those are just common reflexes. Tyjuan has been in and out of surgery for months. Doctors have removed portions of his skull to to relieve swelling on the brain.

His family has not contacted the city about the accident, saying they didn't know who to contact. They are sharing their story with hopes the parks become safer so this doesn't happen to anyone else.

A city spokesperson says the loose backboard at Stoepel Park No. 2 will be removed.

The mayor's office also released this statement saying, "Our prayers are with this young man and his family. The City was not aware of this incident before today. We are investigating and conducting inspections. Maintaining our parks is a top priority. If you notice any issues in your neighborhood park, please call the Detroit Park hotline at (313) 224-5555."
