Heavy Rain Moves through the Metro Monday

A good deal of rain pushed through central Minnesota on Monday dropping more than 2 inches of water in some spots. At first glance, it looked like the rain would move through quickly, but the storms began to “back build” or build in the opposite direction they are moving. This resulted in additional storms forming over the same areas that were already getting rain, allowing the water to fall much longer than the overall storm motion would indicate. Individual storms were moving to the east about 40 mph, but because storms kept forming, the overall movement eastward was only about 10 mph or so, allowing storms to hang in the metro through the mid-afternoon.
