Timberwolves owner: 'Never say never' to Kevin Love trade

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Timberwolves forward Kevin Love has reportedly reached out to the Wolves, saying he will opt out of his current contract and that he intends to become an unrestricted free agent after next season, according to ESPN’s Mark Stein.

However, amid rumors, Wolves owner Glen Taylor told Fox 9 Sports on Sunday evening that he hadn’t spoken with president of basketball operations Flip Saunders and the team currently assumes Love will be on the roster this coming season.

“You never say never, just because you don’t know what some other team might do -- to prepare you for the future -- but at this point of the year, we don’t even talk about it because it’s not the part of the season where you can talk about it,” Taylor said.

The Wolves have not made any public statement on the report, nor can they talk to Love about extending his contract until January 2015. If Love does not accept that extension, which is what’s been reported, the Wolves can begin to negotiate with Love in July 2015.

Timberwolves.com’s Mark Remme reported that through the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Wolves are able to offer Love $26 million more over the life of his next contract than any other team in the league.

Love's current 4-year deal was signed in January 2012, placing him under contract through the 2015-16 season, but the contract says that Love can choose to become an unrestricted free agent in July 2015.

Now, the question is, does the team deal away its All-Star before the June 26 NBA Draft? If the Wolves do trade him, the team could decide he has more trade value this summer come draft night rather than waiting until next February's trade deadline.

“We’re just moving ahead assuming that Kevin’s playing with our roster, and we’re looking at this summer to see if we should tweak it, but a lot of that will depend on who we’re able to draft,” Taylor said.

ESPN sources have said the Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls are among potential trade destinations for Love, but mentions of the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks have popped up all season.
