Thousands of fish found dead in Shark River

Posted: Updated:

BELMAR, N.J. (AP) - Oxygen depletion is believed the likely cause of a massive fish kill in the Shark River.

Monmouth County's health department received a report at 5:30 a.m. Monday. Officials say thousands of fish have died mainly in the Belmar section of the river, but a total count has not been completed.

Environmental Protection Department spokesman Larry Ragonese tells the Asbury Park Press the likely scenario is a huge group of fish ended up in a small estuary and a slightly low oxygen levels resulted in their deaths.

The fish are mainly bunker or menhaden.

The DEP has taken samples to make sure a disease is not to blame.
