Fire inside illegal basement bedroom kills 5 dogs

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Five dogs died in an illegal basement bedroom fire in St. Paul, but the lone human occupant was able to escape uninjured and one dog was able to be rescued with CPR.

The fire broke out at 996 Tuscarora Avenue in St. Paul in an basement area that did not have suitable windows for fire escapes; however, fire officials say the person inside when the fire broke out was young and small enough to escape through a very small window. One dog was

The American Red Cross is assisting the home’s five occupants. The fire was apparently caused by "careless smoking of a hookah pipe" in the basement bathroom, the St. Paul Fire Department said.
