Local pastor calling on men to act as role models amid violence

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Another deadly weekend in Chicago has one victim’s family saying enough is enough.

“They were off to see my granddaughter go to prom. We saw her, she went off, we took pictures and stuff, we’re getting ready to clean up and we hear gun shots,” said Aretha Cummings in an interview with FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis.

Cumming says her niece, 36-year-old Summer Moore, was fatally shot in the chest while sitting on a front porch in Morgan Park Friday night.

“They was coming from down there and somehow Summer got hit,” said Cummings.

Chicago Police told FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis Moore was not the intended target.

Moore is just one of more than half a dozen people shot since Friday.

New Beginnings Church Pastor Corey B. Brooks launched #5000BrothersOnTheBlock on social media and is calling on men to act as role models and cover 500 blocks during the summer months.

“We’re partnering with The Chicago Police Department to find out the 500 hottest spots in Chicago, specifically on the South Side, West Side, East Side. And from there, we’ll have it pin-pointed by ward maps,” said Brooks in an interview with FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis.

By hot, Brooks means the most violent blocks in Chicago.

By Saturday night, one thousand volunteers had signed up, including Alvin Rider.

“We’re going to go to the dope spots, the dope blocks. We’re going to go right in there and get involved and engaged and have some conversation. We’re going to offer them some alternatives to violence,” said Rider.

“We tell them it is a walk of faith but look, we also tell them we’re already not safe so if we’re not going to be safe, let’s not be safe doing something positive.

“My family is just innocent bystanders, it’s sad, it hurts. My heart is broke, it’s just torn apart because Summer is a very special person. She the light, she’s everything,” said Aretha Cummings.

Summer Moore leaves behind three teenage children and a family filled with heartbreak.

Sign up for #5000BrothersOnTheBlock starts next Sunday, May 18 at New Beginnings Church located at 6620 South King Drive, Chicago, Ill., 60637.
