On Thursday May 8, 2014, the Twin Cities, and much of southern Minnesota, saw its first organized severe weather outbreak of the season. As a meteorologist, I was fortunate to go along with the FOX 9 storm chaser Tim Purington as we tracked down the first twisters of the season. We left the station at around 1 pm and headed south on hwy 169 in hopes of documenting the severe storms, and we were not disappointed. Like a duck on a beetle, we were all over it.

For more than 20 years, Tim Purington has been chasing storms right here in the Upper Midwest. As with most professional storm chasers, the vehicle we set out in was well equipped. From real time radar, internet, GPS and several live streaming HD video cameras, we had it all covered, so I relaxed and enjoyed the hunt.

HAVE RADAR WILL TRAVEL. HEAVY RAIN IN LE SUER, MN 5/8/14

The first stop was just south of St. James. We drove into the southwest quadrant of the storm to get right under a couplet we detected on radar. A couplet is an indicating signature on Doppler radar which highlights signs of rotation. We could actually feel the warm moist winds feeding into the storm on our right and the cooler dryer downdraft winds on our left. The sky was spinning overhead indicating we were right underneath the circulation. We smartly decided to go to a safer location and shoot the video as the tornado formed. I had to check my drawers after this one.

TORNADO #1  ST. JAMES MN 5/8/14

Our second stop was about 10 miles from Lake Crystal, MN in Blue Earth county. Since we have been following the storm for about an hour, it didn't take much to notice the rotation which eventually produced a tornado, although briefly as you can see in the video above. Below is a still shot of that touchdown.

TORNADO #2  NEAR LAKE CRYSTAL, MN 5/8/14

Our third and final stop in the pursuit of meteorological action took us to Gaylord in Sibley county. Although the storm looked impressive on radar, with tops over 50,000 feet, and with sirens blaring, we did not witness any actual touchdown. However, one incredible looking sky as the sun set on the first day severe weather this season.
