Mayor Emanuel recruits Chicago radio DJs to join anti-violence effort

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) - Radio stations in Chicago are taking part in a citywide anti-violence program by urging listeners not to use guns.

“We do policing, we do prevention, we do penalties…we also need parenting. We're going to add a fifth ‘P’ today,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

That 'P' is pop culture.

Mayor Emanuel announced Friday that radio stations were taking part in the initiative called "Put the Guns Down."

A number of both English and Spanish-speaking stations have agreed to air public service announcements from radio personalities and celebrities. They also will host a monthly simulcast focusing on community responsibility and remind listeners about anti -violence programs. DJs will open and close each radio show with the phrase, "Put the Guns Down."

"I'm tired of hearing the news every weekend about the killings and murders in Chicago…as a radio personality in Chicago I grow weary,” said Tony Scoffield of WGCI.

The effort comes as the police department has reported a rise in violent crimes, something that typically happens when the temperatures rise and more people are out on the streets.

"If you see something, say something…the whole no snitching rule, it doesn’t apply. The whole retaliation is unacceptable…we have to be accountable of children’s lives," said Frankie Robinson of Power 92.3.

FOX 32's Darlene Hill contributed to this report.
