A Minnesota man has been charged with kidnapping a 14-year-old Rochester, New York girl he met in an online chat room.

Michael Angelo Goerlich, 53, of Landfall, Minn. was charged Thursday in Washington County with two counts of kidnapping and one count of false imprisonment.

According to the charges, Goerlich met the girl online approximately one year ago, posing as another girl. Once the girl learned Goerlich was a man, she cut off communication, but in the past month they recently started texting and talking over the phone. Washington County Sheriff Hutton said Goerlich participated in phone sex with the girl over a chat line.

On Sunday, May 4, Goerlich drove to New York, where he picked the girl up near the intersection of Melrose and Genesis in Rochester. On the drive back to Minnesota, Goerlich took away the girl’s cell phone when it rang, and deprived her of a phone at his mobile home in Landfall.

When they arrived to his home, Goerlich apparently told his roommate she was his 19-year-old co-worker.

The roommate told investigators that she didn't look 19.

On Tuesday, May 6, the girl was able to find a phone and call for help.

Bail for Goerlich has been set at $1 million. The girl was in protective custody Thursday.

“It's all about that Internet safety. It’s all about knowing what our kids are doing, what they are doing, who they are doing it with,” Sheriff Hutton said.
