NFL DRAFT: Vikings pick Bridgewater and Barr, pass on Manziel

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK - The Minnesota Vikings passed on Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and selected UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Then, for the third straight year, the Vikings traded back into the first round to pick Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater No. 32 overall. The Vikings sent their second round and fourth round picks to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for the Bridgewater pick.

RARE TALENT

Entering the draft with the No. 8 overall pick, the Vikings first traded down to No. 9 and gained a fifth round pick (No. 145 overall) from Cleveland. Manziel was eventually selected No. 22 overall by the Browns.

"You just don't pass up these types of players. They are just too hard to find," Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said at a press conference after selecting Barr.

Barr spent just two seasons at UCLA, but during those two seasons he led the team in sacks (13.5) and tackles for loss (21.5).

Throughout the offseason, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer has hinted that the Vikings needed some help at the linebacker position, so this pick isn't exactly a surprise.

ZIMMER: Fans will be 'very, very proud' of Bridgewater

The 6-foot-2 Miami-native Bridgewater spent three seasons at Louisville and Heisman Trophy buzz circulated after he threw for 3,970 yards, 31 touchdowns and only four interceptions in 2013. He didn't end up a finalist, but will still go down as one of Louisville's best players.

“You know the thing I like the most about him? He wins. He wins everywhere he’s ever been he wins. Starts as a freshman in high school, wins. Starts as a freshman in college, wins. This guy, he’s got something about him” Zimmer said at a post-draft press conference. “I probably shouldn’t say this but I’m going to anyway, one of the reasons why we had him come in, we had to get him another physical because he had a little thing about his heart."

Zimmer then asked how he was doing. Bridgewater indicated he was in good health, but did joke about his heart being “too big.”

“I think the Vikings fans are going to be very, very proud of him,” Zimmer added.

Several teams including the Vikings passed on Manziel, much head scratching ensued, but Zimmer said his staff had a method to what seemed like madness.

“I don’t want to speak for Rick [Spielman] but we wouldn’t have moved up just to get anybody. Somebody asked me earlier today would we take a quarterback in the third round and I said, ‘It has to be the guy that we want,'" Zimmer said.

Zimmer tries to competition on his team, and Bridgewater studies, but there's still two other quarterbacks on the roster.

“Teddy will play when we feel like he’s ready if he’s the best guy, which we hope that he will,” Zimmer said.

Despite a lackluster pro day, Bridgewater has already vocalized his desire to come to Minnesota.

"I asked him, ‘What do you think is the best situation for you?’" Zimmer said. "He said, ‘Coach, you’re going to think I’m blowing you smoke, but I think the Minnesota Vikings is the place for me.'"
