ACLU files MLB All-Star 'clean zone' lawsuit against Minneapolis

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota is filing a lawsuit against the city of Minneapolis for creating a “clean zone” that limits downtown events and demonstrations for 15 days surrounding Major League Baseball All-Star Game festivities.

The lawsuit is filed on behalf of two members of the One Day in July Street Festival Committee. The group worries a July 19 event to honor the 1934 Teamsters strike -- in which two strikers were killed by Minneapolis police -- will be impacted by the All-Star Week restrictions.

A resolution passed by the Minneapolis City Council gives MLB the authority to approve or block any events inside the downtown "clean zone."

“It is disappointing that the Minneapolis City Council didn’t even blink an eye at signing over our rights to Major League Baseball,” said Charles Samuelson, executive director of ACLU-MN. “A government body cannot just hand over control of our constitutional rights to a private company.”

The lawsuit seeks a court order to strike down the city council resolution and declare it unconstitutional.
