Home Depot volunteers remodel home of blind Mich. veteran

SAGINAW, Mich. (WJBK) -- Volunteers from Home Depot stores in Michigan used a little elbow grease to make the life of a vet easier on Tuesday.

The Good Samaritans came from 10 Home Depot stores to the home in Saginaw, Mich.

Their goal was to remodel 87-year-old Army veteran Joe Camese's home to make it more feasible for him and his wife.

Camese is blind and he and his wife have wanted to enjoy their backyard safely since they moved in about 20 years ago.

The volunteers worked on building a deck in the backyard, putting up a fence, did some landscaping and even did some work inside the house.

"Right now our focus is to make sure every veteran has a safe and happy home," said Judy Custer, a Home Depot employee.

The community took pride in making sure the family has a happy home.

Leonard Smith who is was volunteer and is also a military veteran said, “I know that I take pride in that, and I definitely want to make sure that my fellow countrymen are taken care of."

The local United Way also worked with the Home Depot on the remodel.

"I think it's a wonderful thing that you have this group of people who are very loyal in giving back to the community," said United Way volunteer Henrietta Watson.

Camese says he's very thankful and he doesn't know how to express how grateful and appreciative he is for the work of all involved.

The project costs around $9,000.

The money came from the Home Depot Foundation, who has pledged $80 million to renovate the homes of veterans over five years.
