Man dies after vehicle hit by tire on I-75

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A man has died after a sudden traffic accident on I-75 in Oakland County Tuesday evening.

Police say the victim was driving in his own lane on the southbound side of the road when a wheel suddenly flew off a vehicle traveling on the northbound side. The wheel rolled and bounced across the median and struck the victim's vehicle.

Michigan State Police Lt. Brian Cole says the victim drove a short distance into a ditch and into some trees. The 49-year-old from Ortonville could not be revived.

The driver of the other vehicle was still able to maintain his direction and pulled off at the next exit.

State Police say this situation is extremely rare. Potential charges could be negligence, but it's also possible no charges would be filed. State police are still investigating.
