Beverly Hills Condemns Brunei Laws; Hotel Boycott Grows

Beverly Hills, CA -

(FOX 11 / AP) Beverly Hills officials have condemned Brunei's strict new Islamic criminal laws and want its government to separate itself from the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The city council's unanimous resolution Tuesday night calls for the tiny Southeast Asian nation to change its laws or divest its ownership of the iconic property.

Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah owns the Beverly Hills Hotel, which has been the target of a growing Hollywood boycott since Brunei embraced its new penal code last week. Under the new law, adultery, abortion and same-sex relationships are serious offenses punishable by flogging and stoning.

A growing number of Hollywood groups have relocated events traditionally held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in protest. The International Women's Media Foundation and Barbara Davis Carousel of Hope are the latest to join the boycott.

From Bob DeCastro:

The chorus of criticism is growing louder to condemn the owner of the Beverly Hills Hotel, the government of Brunei. The Beverly Hills City Council is the latest to do so in a unanimous 5-0 vote.

Council members moved to condemn the government of Brunei after its head of state, the Sultan, implemented Sharia law last week, which calls for extreme punishment by stoning to death for behaviors like adultery and homosexuality. The resolution also demands the Brunei government divests its ownership of the famed Hotel. A number of charities and groups have canceled events at the hotel and a growing list of celebrities are calling for a boycott. The CEO of Brunei's Dorchester collection of luxury hotels insist the company itself stands for equality. Some hotel workers, caught up in the controversy, also fear losing their jobs. Still the Beverly Hills city Council said it wanted to send a strong message to be Brunei government. The BH City Council resolution condemns Brunei, but it is not a city – sanctioned boycott.

Brunei's Dorchester Collection of luxury hotels also includes the Hotel Bel Air.
