MSU-Mankato student critically injured in sober bus stunt

MANKATO, Minn. (KMSP) -

A student from Minnesota State University's Mankato campus is in critical condition after he took a nasty fall off the back of the shuttle bus dedicated to offering a safe and sober ride home.

The Express has given 120,000 rides since it started 10 years ago, but this is the first time transit officials have seen anything like this.

On weekends, college students flock to the bars in downtown Mankato to enjoy a night on the town -- but the way 21-year-old Dylan Taylor Smyth got on the bus that is supposed help students get home safe was anything but.

Surveillance video from the city shows people lining up to hop on the late night express at the bus stop on Cherry Street, but as the bus turns the corner, an unseen passenger can be seen standing on the back bumper.

Officers found Smyth several blocks away, laying in the middle of an intersection after he apparently fell off the back of the bus.

"Passersby had seen the young man lying in the street," Cmdr. Matt DuRose explained. "Officers found he had a head injury of some sort."

According to DuRose, witnesses watched as Smyth rode the back of the bus out of the downtown area; however, the city of Mankato, which operates the Express, said the bus itself does not have cameras and the driver didn't even know Smyth had been on the bumper until the next day.

Now, students who spoke with Fox 9 News say they hope the incident won't mark the last stop of the late night express bus; however, city leaders say they have no plans to change the service.

As of Tuesday morning, Smyth remains in critical condition at the Mayo Clinic.
