Operation City Surge Hopes To Crackdown On Violence In Chester

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER, Pa. -

On Tuesday, local state and federal officials announced a joint effort called "Operation City Surge," which hopes to flood Chester City streets with police and help get illegal guns off the street.

Fox 29's Chris O'Connell has the report.

Local police officers will now get help from other law enforcement agencies who will come into Chester.

Most notably, the Pennsylvania State Police will work with city police conduct routine patrols.

Delaware County Narcotics investigators, SEPTA transit police, the ATF and the U.S. Marshal are all involved in what is called largest surge of police ever to come into the City of Chester

"The gun violence in the City of Chester has now reached epidemic proportions so it's now time to address illegal guns, now we need to take stand against illegal guns," said Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan.

Today, the homicide rate in Chester is double compared to what it was last year and there have been 42 people shot, which is also a near record.

In day one of the new crime initiative, authorities rounded up 10 people on outstanding warrants.
