EXCLUSIVE: 3 Shattuck-St. Mary's students investigated for sexual assault

FARIBAULT, Minn. (KMSP) -

Fox 9 News has learned that Faribault police are investigating three Shattuck-St. Mary's students for sexual assault, and one of those is a member of the school's legendary hockey program.

Investigators say they are still in the preliminary stages of a case that could last for weeks, but the stakes are high for the students involved -- especially for a highly-regarded hockey player.

The historic and pastoral campus of Shattuck-St. Mary's hosts more than a prestigious boarding school. In recent years, it's also become synonymous with hockey. In fact, it's almost a hockey factory of sorts, producing big-time alumni like Zach Parise, of the Minnesota Wild, and Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Just last month, the boy's prep team won a record 9th national championship, with three of those championship titles coming in just the last four years; however, Fox 9 News has learned something else allegedly happened then, too.

One of the players from that team -- a standout and potential NHL prospect -- is now under investigation along with two other students for a sexual assault that occurred somewhere off campus 9 days ago.

Faribault police say the alleged sexual assault happened on Saturday, April 26, and was reported by a third party the next day. Police would not say who that third party was, but the school found out about it after the weekend and they reported it too, which is required under state law.

"We are assisting the police in their investigation of an off-campus incident of alleged student misconduct," Shattuck-St. Mary's confirmed in a statement. "Out of respect for that process and because the allegations involve students, it would be inappropriate for us to make any further public comment at this time."

The school has said nothing more, and won't even confirm whether the suspects are still enrolled -- but in a school with fewer than 500 students and where hockey is king, chances are everyone knows the players and the penalty.

Police declined to say whether the victim was also a student, but of the three suspects, only one is 18 and the other two are juveniles. None have been arrested or charged.

The Faribault Police Department did say that the school has been extremely cooperative in the investigation, but it is still unclear at this point whether the suspects have granted interviews to police of if they've lawyered up. A phone call to the parents of the hockey player involved was not returned.
