Laura's Likes: Mother's Day Ideas

Posted: Updated:

Mother's Day is less than a week away and I have found some really beautiful and fun ideas for mom.

I love jewelry and I recently came across some beautiful pieces that any mom would love. And what makes these special is the story behind it and the historic significance.

Sweet Charleston Designs

Sweet Charleston Designs has jewelry that is reminiscent of artifacts from our colonial history.

The unique pieces are a tribute to the ancient art of coiled woven basketry, also known as sweet grass basketry, which is the oldest African American art form in the United States. It was introduced in America in the late 1600s by enslaved rice farmers.

Each piece is hand cut and embossed one piece at a time.

The company out of South Carolina says they are dedicated to preserving the art form of sweet grass basketry and encouraging others to preserve the natural resources used by descendants of the original basket makers.

You can find out more on http://www.sweetcharlestondesigns.com.

These are made in sterling silver, gold and pewter. All are made in the U.S.

Price varies depending on the metal you choose. The pieces start at $50.

Hot Girls Pearls

Next up is a different kind of jewelry -- oversized pearls with a function. These are for moms who need hot flash relief in an instant.

These glam beads are the first and only fashion accessory that provide relief for hot flashes caused by menopause, anxiety, heat waves, pregnancy, etc.

They are even great for the beach if you get too hot.

The pearls are filled with nontoxic cooling gel. These elegant necklaces get arctic cold in the freezer. Then they stay nice and cool on you.

They call this global cooling -- one woman at a time.

Constance Sherman came up with the idea for the pearls. She is a veteran in the fashion world and she tried to find something wearable and fashionable that would cool her off. When she couldn't find it, she made it.

Keep them in the freezer. Then when you go out, take them in the little insulated travel pack to keep them cold.

They make necklaces and bracelets. Prices start at $50. They have white, pink and black pearl finishes.

Urban Stems

And finally, who doesn't love flowers? I just discovered Urban Stems. It is easy to order and reasonably priced and you can have them delivered in D.C. or Rosslyn within two hours.

Urban Stems is brand new. They just launched around Valentine’s Day.

Ajay and Jeff -- the masterminds behind Urban Stems got into the flower businesses out of frustration. Ajay sent flowers and ended up with a customer service nightmare. The flowers were a mess and the experience stunk.

There is something to be said for focusing on a few things and doing them well. Well, Urban Stems does these well. They have three bouquets to choose from so you’re not overwhelmed with choices.

It is $35 a bouquet and there is no delivery fee. Each bouquet comes with the chartreuse burlap cover. The stems are sitting in water inside the burlap.

And do you always wonder how the flowers look when they arrive? Well, Urban Stems will take a picture of the flowers as they are delivered and email it to you.

They are offering a Mother's Day special: $45 for their bouquet plus a box of Olivia Macarons -- those classic small French cookies from Georgetown.

If you live outside the delivery zone, which is D.C. and Rosslyn, you can order through Olivia Macaron now through Saturday. That is just for Mother's Day.

Pre-order now by going to https://urbanstems.com.

For $5 off, enter the promo code "sendhappy5" at checkout.

Another cool thing Urban Stems is doing is teaming up with another company to teach guys how to be gentlemen -- sessions on being chivalrous and proper occasions to send flowers, etc. That is coming soon.
