LA Mayor Garcetti Says Sterling Will Fight Penalty

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA - (FOX 11 / AP) Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says he believes Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling will likely fight any sanctions imposed on him by the NBA for making racist remarks. Garcetti made his comments on CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday.

On Tuesday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for racist comments made on an audio recording, fined him $2.5 million and urged league owners to force him to sell the team.

In a conversation afterward, Garcetti says he urged Sterling to apologize but that Sterling didn't seem to realize the sting of his remarks.

Garcetti says Sterling believes he's a good person who will remain the owner of the team for a long time.

He says he'd be willing to urge people to boycott the Clippers if Sterling keeps the team.

From Bob DeCastro:

Donald Sterling has yet to speak publicly about the scandal, but we are hearing from some have spoken to the 80-year-old billionaire.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke to CBS' Face the Nation. He believes Sterling will fight to keep the LA Clippers. He predicts a "protracted fight."

Despite the drama and distractions, the Clippers won Game 7 on Saturday against the Golden State Warriors. They move onto the Western Conference Semi-finals and take on the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight.

Donald Sterling's wife Shelley Sterling also released a statement over the weekend. She is co-owner of the franchise. Shelley says she supports the NBA's decision to ban her husband for life, but she says nothing about selling the team.

And of course, we heard from the other woman in the scandal. 31 year old V. Stiviano spoke to Barbara Walters on 20/20. Stinziano says she does not think Sterling is a racist. She calls him "kind" and "generous. She also denies being romantically involved with Sterling. She says he is more like a "father figure."

Stiviano says Sterling is "hurting" and "feels alone."
