Prosecutors: NYC teen asked 'Am I gonna do life?'

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Court documents show that a 14-year-old accused of fatally shooting a fellow passenger on a New York City bus asked investigators whether he had shot a rival or an innocent man.

Prosecutors say teenager Kahton Anderson asked, "Yo, am I gonna do life for this?" and added, "It's a war out here."

Kahton has been charged with second-degree murder in the March 20 shooting of Angel Rojas aboard a city bus.

He pleaded not guilty on Friday at his arraignment in Brooklyn state Supreme Court.

The shooting was apparently sparked by a dispute between teenage gangs, or crews.

Kahton's lawyer, Frederic Pratt, said members of a rival crew got on the bus and Kahton feared for his life.

Prosecutors said the 39-year-old Rojas was not the teen's intended target.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
