Collegeville Fire Company Reunites Baby Ducks With Their Mother

Posted: Updated:
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - A lone male mallard (we’ll call him Uncle Frank) patrolled the retention pond at the Perkiomen Woods complex off Route 29 on Friday.

A line of debris on the grass above, hinted at the flood levels of the day before, but not of the near tragedy that played out here.

Jen Lorenz was walking to the nearby Wawa when she noticed something odd.

"We saw the female duck and she was upset. You could tell,” recalls Lorenz.

A few feet away was the source of mom's angst.

Lorenz continues, “we could hear the little ducklings.  We walked over and they were in the storm drain."

A dozen ducklings were stuck beneath the heavy metal storm grate and tossed around in the swirling floodwaters.

The Collegeville Fire company- had been out late the night before, performing a dozen water rescues.

So battalion Chief Jay Murphy and assistant Chief Brian Kuklinski decided to handle this job themselves.

"We slid it back all the way so we could make entrance , got a five gallon bucket and Brian went down,” describes Chief Murphy.

"And then he just got lucky and scooped them all in the five gallon bucket. They stayed together,” says describes Chief Murphy.

All during the rescue, mom ,(we'll call her Francine) circled warily around the firefighters.

Brian handed the duck bucket to Murphy, and he finished off the rescue, reuniting the kids(we'll call them Tina, Jackie, Frank, Tony, Bill, Huey, Looey, Dewey, Lamar, Ed, Sally and Umberto)  with their grateful mother.

Murphy radioed back to dispatch:

Murphy remembers, “I said, rescue complete of 12 victims!  Hahaha!"

In the interest of hard-hitting journalism, we had some questions for Uncle Frank, about the kind of negligent mother who would let a dozen of her kids go down a storm drain while her attention was...elsewhere."

But there was a bit of a language barrier here but overall Uncle Frank says Francine is grateful to have here 12 kiddies back.
