Jayru Campbell gets plea deal in case involving security guard body-slam

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Cass Tech quarterback Jayru Campbell has been granted a plea deal in the case involving him body-slamming a school guard to the ground.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny on Friday agreed to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office recommendation to sentence Campbell under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which allows young defendants to have a conviction erased if they complete sentence terms.

Campbell had been was charged with felony assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and aggravated assault, a misdemeanor charge.

During Friday's hearing, Campbell admitted to slamming the guard to the ground in January after refusing to follow school policy and pull a hood off his head. The confrontation was recorded on video.

Kenny said the decision had nothing to do with Campbell being a "star athlete,' FOX 2's Roop Raj reports.

A sentencing date was set for May 30 at 8 a.m.

Campbell has said he will play for Michigan State University in 2015. He led Cass Tech to state championships in 2011 and 2012.
