Van crashes into The Bulldog Bar in St. Paul during chase

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A minivan trying to elude a state trooper crashed through the front window of The Bulldog Bar in downtown St. Paul overnight, injuring 6 people.

The crash happened shortly after midnight at the bar on 6th Street. None of the injuries reported were serious.

Before the crash, the Minnesota State Patrol got a call about an erratic driver on Highway 61 and Interstate 494. After finding the minivan in downtown St. Paul, a short chase started and the van crashed into The Bulldog.

“Out of the corner of my eye I just saw these lights coming at me,” said Erin Dodd who was with four friends at a table by the window. “It was kind of like chaos after that. I didn’t even know, no one knew what happened really. Were you able to get out of the way or was it too quick? It was way too quick.”

The driver of the van and 5 people sitting near the window were hurt and taken to a nearby hospital.

“The trooper’s car did not make contact with the van -- what we call a PIT maneuver -- none of that was done to my knowledge,” State Patrol Lt. Chris Erickson said. “The only collision was the van into the actual building and the post alongside of the building.”

Police aren't sure whether alcohol played a part in the crash.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
