Medical marijuana compromise: 3 things you need to know

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton’s latest comments on medical marijuana come as House leaders announce a compromise that does not include smoking.

Thursday, the parents of children with severe forms of epilepsy gathered with House Speaker Paul Thissen (DFL-Minneapolis) and chief House author Carly Melin (DFL-Hibbing) to announce they’ve reached a deal with law enforcement.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA DEAL: 3 THINGS

- The deal calls for a clinical medical marijuana trial that would allow the limited participation of children and adults with severe illnesses.

- The bill allows the option of a single state-based marijuana supplier if no federal source can be found.

- It also requires the use of medical cannabis vaporizers only in the presence of a nurse or doctor.

“If they want to go all the way and send marijuana all over the state for people to smoke it’s not going to pass,” Dayton said in a Fox 9 Morning News interview Thursday.

PROGRESS FOR PARENTS

“I believe this is our best option,” said Angie Weaber, whose daughter suffers from Dravet Syndrome. “I believe it’s going to get the medicine into our hands that fastest. I believe this is something Gov. Dayton will sign.”

“I’m supporting whatever we can get done this year,” said Jeremy Pauling, whose daughter has Battens Disease. “We need to have something go ahead. We can’t keep moving backward. And if we keep holing our kids back there is going to be no solution for the future, and if they want tests, this will be giving them tests.”

GOV. DAYTON STATEMENT

"I appreciate the efforts being made to develop a bill that offers hope to children and adults suffering from horrible diseases. The bill places heavy new responsibilities on the Minnesota Department of Health, and I have asked Commissioner Ehlinger to assess the costs of its implementation and its practicability. I also want legal counsel to assess the potential liability to the state from sponsoring such trials. I will need that information before making any decision."
