PHOTOS: Minneapolis pothole delivers airbag-busting punch

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Most drivers cringe when they hit an axle-jostling pothole, but one Minnesota man came across one that was so bad, it triggered his air bags, leaving him with a damaged cornea and a concussion.

"Right as I went through the intersection," Dustin Duarte recalled.

Anyone who has ever hit a spine-jarring pothole knows the damage it can do -- from flat tires to bent rims and alignment issue, but Duarte never expected one would put him in the hospital.

"One of the biggest surprises I ever had in my life," he said. "I was just driving along, listening to music, and Mike Tyson punches me in the face."

Duarte was driving west on 46th Street when a pothole rattled his car, but the one he hit nearly 20 feet later nearly knocked him out with an air-bag sucker punch. VIEW PHOTOS

"The best I can think is: I went in, hit the pothole so deep that my front end hit the concrete, popped off both my airbags," he surmised.

Luckily, Duarte was able to keep his wits and pull over, his car filled with white powder after the driver and passenger airbags deployed.

"The only damage is the airbags and my face," he said.

Duarte bought the 1994 Geo Metro last year for $500, but with both airbags now deployed, it's totaled. Yet, Duarte isn't worried about the car -- he wants to see the road fixed.

"I feel like there should be no driving surfaces in our city where, if you're just driving normally over and not speeding, where your airbags pop off in your face," he said. "I don't want anyone else to get hurt. I don't want money from anyone. I want this issue to be dealt with."

Duarte's car insurance will cover the costs of his medical expenses,
