Sleeping St. Paul boy left alone in parked school bus

Posted: Updated:

School officials confirm that an 11-year-old boy who likely fell asleep on a school bus was left alone in a parking lot for 15 minutes after the routes were completed on March 21.

A police report about the incident was filed just last week, but it's been more than a month since a student from Humboldt Secondary School wound up by himself inside a bus in the Centerline Charter Corporation parking lot.

The company is one of five that contracts with St. Paul Public Schools, and a school spokesperson confirmed the boy spent 10 to 15 minutes alone before he apparently woke, pushed open the doors and walked to an O'Reilly Auto Parts shop to call his mother for a ride.

District officials say they are glad the boy was not harmed, but they have since banned the driver from all routes because the operations manual for contracting bus companies requires that "each school bus driver must do a walk-through inspection to ensure that no sleeping children remain on the school bus."

The bus company has not responded to calls for comment.
