Teen arrested after explosives found on Waseca school playground

Posted: Updated:
WASECA, Minn. (KMSP) -

Waseca police arrested a teenager in connection with the discovery of explosive devices located on a playground in March.

Waseca police confirmed that the first report came on Monday, March 24, after two small devices were found on the Hartley School playground on the south side of the building. One had been detonated, but the other had failed to ignite, police said. Both devices appeared old and investigators say they may have been inside the melting snow.

However, the same type of homemade explosive was also found inside a damaged stuffed toy on the same playground on Friday. As with the first find, the device appeared old.

Felony criminal charges against the 17-year-old boy are expected by Thursday. He remains in custody pending an initial court appearance. No further information about the arrest will be released until a 3 p.m. press conference on Thursday.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Waseca Police Department at 507-835-9720.
