Better Mapping Puts Etiwanda Fire At 2,190 Acres

Posted: Updated:
The number of acres that have been burned in the Etiwanda Fire has been updated to 2,190. There is no change in the perimeter of the fire, but instead better mapping tools have provided a more accurate reading. The fire is 53% contained as of Friday morning. Structure protection engines will continue to patrol the neighborhoods near the perimeter of the fire. The high-pressure weather system will still be in place with very hot 93-degree conditions and low 5% humidity.

The challenge to the firefighters on Friday is the change in wind direction from the northeast to southwest onshore flows. There is a potential for additional fire growth due to this shift in wind direction. Wind strength is diminishing and expected to be in the 5-15 mph range, which will allow for the use of aircraft in firefighting efforts.

The 80-mph wind gusts sent smoke over the area after the blaze erupted around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning in the foothills of the San Bernardino National Forest. The Southern California wildfire eased enough to allow people back into 1,650 homes that were evacuated as smoke choked a foothill community.

The only structure that burned was a fence.
