Detroit's Brenda Jones has an issue with Belle Isle security - KMSP-TV

Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones and other city leaders have an issue with Belle Isle security

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - Is the new state run security on Belle Isle too overzealous?  It appears that's what Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones believes.  She wants Michigan State Troopers to take sensitivity training.

Jones says she believes the Michigan State Troopers are unfairly targeting residents.  She claims the troopers have made arrested about 500 people.  The state disputes the number, saying the records show the number of arrests since February , when the MSP took over security on the island, are fewer than 200.

Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey says she was pulled over for speeding for going 35 in a 25 m.p.h. zone. During the event the trooper told her he was trying to help keep "riffraff: off of the Island.  Play the video in the player to hear Winfrey describe the moment to Fox 2's Robin Murdoch.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was also pulled over for speeding.

Belle Isle is patrolled by Department of Natural Resources conservation officers and Michigan State Police. The DNR reports that fewer than 200 people were arrested on Belle Isle from Feb. 1 to March 31.  Read DNR arrest reports, click here.>>

Some of  the arrests were made for outstanding warrants, marijuana possession, a concealed weapon and open intoxicants

The DNR patrols other state parks as well.

Belle Isle Park became a Michigan state park on Feb. 10.  The city still owns the park but is leasing it for 30 years to the state.

The state claims it will make improvements to Belle Isle and save Detroit $4 million to $6 million a year in maintenance and policing costs.

What do you think?  Are you worried that Michigan State Police are going too far or is it about time police enforce the laws the govern the island?
