Jessie welcomed us into her dressing room minutes before performing another sold-out show. She looked back on how she won the role that lead to a Tony Award nomination, announced Tuesday.
King's best-selling 1971 album "Tapestry" sat on a shelf above us. It is one of the records that helped Jessie perfect King's tone. Jessie also plays the piano on stage but the sound comes from a pianist in the orchestra below.
King, now 72, waited four months to see the show, fearing it would be too painful to watch. One night she surprised the cast and showed up unannounced.
The show is nominated for seven Tony Awards, including best musical.
