Family Fundraises For A Funeral After Their Son Suddenly Dies

Posted: Updated:
COLLINGSWOOD, N.J. - 17-year-old Josh Bland died after a church basketball practice on Friday.

Now people are trying to see that his family has enough money for a proper burial.

"When the neighbor came in and said ‘Ms. Bland he's not there, he's dead.’ I said "I know that, but don't tell me that,” recalled Roxanne Bland.

Bland says she just lost the love of her life, her 17-year-old son Joshua.

"He could not have made me a [more] proud mother."

The fun-loving, devoted son and Collingswood high school basketball star died suddenly on Friday.

Bland last saw him when he came home from basketball practice at church on Thursday night.

She continues, “he came in the house bragging, ‘mom, my team is 5 and 0.’  I said go ahead!"

“My sister was so excited and said ‘yeah mom, he made the last three shots.’ I said ‘that’s what I'm talking about.”

She tried to get him up from school the next morning but he didn't move.

"Now I'm shaking.  My arms could have fell off.  I'm shaking. Josh wake up, wake up, this is not happening now.  You have to go to school, wake up,” remembers Bland.

"Then I realized. It set in. I went hysterical. I started screaming."

His grief stricken teammates and friends held this vigil in his honor.

"Every kid was always saying Joshua was always making me laugh.  Joshua did this, Joshua did that.”

The community is also coming together to help the family bury Joshua by setting up a page at gofundme.com.

And although his life was cut short, his mother says there's no doubt he made a mark.

"I would think that his legacy would be love because that's what I kept pouring into him,” says Roxanne Bland.
