6-month-old beaten, father in custody

Posted: Updated:
TAYLOR, Mich. (WJBK) - A 6-month-old baby is fighting for his life in the hospital after being beaten. Police have the boy's father in custody.

Jesse's skull is fractured, and his brain is swollen and bleeding.

Police questioned the child's 23-year-old father, who works as an EMT, and then arrested him at the family's home in Taylor.

"He admitted to punching Jesse several times. They think that, from the damage that was done, that he had to have hit him with something or dropped him," says the child's mother, Corie Stahl.

Stahl says she is severely hearing impaired, and never heard noises or screams coming from the other room. She also said she was drugged by her fiance.

She has had no contact with the child's father since the alleged assault, and is spending most of her time at the hospital.

"They had to remove the bone in his skull to alleviate the brain pressure and the bleeding and the swelling. [Doctors] said it can go either way right now," says Stahl.

Taylor police say the child's father is being held pending a warrant request from the Wayne County Prosecutor's office.
