Firefighters Battle Fire At Wharton State Forest

Firefighters are battling a forest fire in South Jersey, which is raging near the same area where fire crews put a fire out on Friday.

This fire started Sunday morning at Wharton State Forest in Shamong Township, Burlington County.

Crews say it has the potential to keep on spreading. 

Fox 29 has been told that 900 acres have already burned so far, and the fire is only 50% contained, as of 10 p.m., Sunday.

50 firefighters, along with a helicopter, and a fixed wing aircraft have been working to put out the flames.

“We have people carrying those torches through the forest putting fire on the ground so that the fire will consume the fuels between the main body of the wildfire and the anchor point," said Incident Commander, Robert Gill.

Fox 29 went into the fire lines with firefighters to show how fast wildfires burn.

A high sun angle, low humidity and whipping winds are make the perfect and dangerous mix for fire.

"Everything hasn't greened up yet, so the sun is high in the sky it dries out the forest floor, and the fuels, and makes it easier for fires to start and continue," said Gill.

Luckily, no properties are in danger, but the Goshen Campground was evacuated.

Smoke from this fire could be seen as far away as Center City. It's the 6th major fire state forestry rangers have been fighting in the last 2 weeks.

Fire officials say winds are cooperating, so it’s keeping the fire blowing towards Mullica River, which is a natural fire break.

They say it all goes to plan they may have this fire contained sometime after midnight.
