Cancer patients using exercise to help heal

Posted: Updated:

In the fight against cancer, doctors usually recommend drugs and radiation therapy. But you can add exercise to a growing list of ways Twin Cities cancer patients are trying to recover.

“You’re not only battling the disease itself, but you are battling the medications and the toxicity of the drugs you are on,” said Lisa Rosenthal.

But there is nothing stopping her determination to stay in shape. Not even terminal breast cancer.

“It’s a tough diagnosis, but in some ways, it re-focuses you on the important things in life,” Rosenthal said.

It is Rosenthal’s infectious positive attitude that has spread to a special class of survivors. Each person in a special yoga class has been diagnosed with cancer at different stages and they are all fighting to stay alive through exercise.

Cathy Skinner created the recovery program after watching her own father die of cancer. But in this class, everyone is in control and goes at their own pace and no one feels self-conscious. Through their common struggle and journey, this group of strangers say they are now a family.

“People understand what I am going through,” said Larry Fountain. “I understand what they are going through.”

There are several exercise for cancer recovery classes across the metro. The group is having a fundraiser next Thursday for scholarships to help offset the costs of the classes.

A 25-year-old Annandale man has been missing since Aug. 22, and while police aren't releasing many details, family members worry that foul play may be involved, so on Saturday, they did what they've done for the last several days -- they went looking for him.
