PHOENIX - A fire has damaged an apartment complex near Scottsdale Road and Bell.

Firefighters say a 911 caller initially said there was soldering work being done in the attic of the leasing office if the Pillar at Scottsdale on Friday.

At least six engines and two ladder companies were sent by Phoenix and Scottsdale Fire Departments.

SkyFOX video showed flames shooting out of gaping holes in the tile roof of at least one building in the apartment complex until firefighters were able to douse the roof with water.

Crews aggressively attacked the inside of the complex, but say they were forced out by the amount of fire and the dangers to the firefighters.

Shortly afterward the flames then appeared to subdue as crews shot water onto the roof.

Fire Department Captain Tony Mure says the fire was sparked accidentally as a repairman was trying to fix a cooling system leak in the attic of the leasing office.
